Lech Karpiński, Assistant Professor, Laboratory of Systematics, Zoogeography and Ecology of Invertebrates, Museum and Institute of Zoology, Polish Academy of Sciences: Warsaw, Poland,

-> »Cutting the Gordian Knot: Taxonomic revision of the genus Purpuricenus Dejean, 1821 (Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae: Trachyderini) from the Western Palaearctic region »

Longhorned beetles is one of the largest, most diverse, and ecologically and economically important family of beetles—the most biodiverse order of animals, with ~ 380 000 described species and probably several million more yet unnamed. Purpuricenus is a worldwide genus that includes approx. 80 species, however, despite their relatively large size and beautiful colours, as well as enigmatic bionomy, these insects are poorly understood both taxonomically and ecologically. In my SYNTHESYS+ project, I investigated Purpuricenus specimens housed at the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle that represent taxa from the Western Palaearctic region: between Portugal and Iran and between the southern part of European Russia and Algeria. The MNHN collection includes many types described by Maurice Pic, as well as numerous regular specimens of taxonomically important and rare species not found in most collections.
I used the equipment and facilities (e.g., scanning electron microscope and image stacking studio) at the Museum to better understand this intricate genus—its intrageneric systematics and some preliminary phylogenetic relations. In this presentation, I will introduce the methodology utilised in the project and share some of the first results of my study.
