Premier séminaire de rentrée avec Pierre Galipot, pour une présentation sur la morphogenèse intitulée PALIMPSEST: a Pattern Analysis Library to Investigate Morphogenetic Processes by Shape Exploration through Space and Time

Morphogenesis has been a subject of interest since ancient times – particularly due to our immediate visual perception of shapes – while paradoxally remaining a discipline whose paradigms and questions remain largely unsolved. The issue especially lies in the very nature of shapes, which are highly integrative—almost anything can have an effect on the final shape of a biological structure—and these effects are completely non-linear, unlike mass, for example. Therefore, understanding the microscopic mechanisms involved in morphogenesis is often insufficient to fully understand the macroscopic scale, i.e. the form or pattern. Shapes and patterns retain traces of the morphogenetic processes that formed them, and a certain memory of previous states. As such, they are palimpsests. The aim of this project, which will be submitted to ERC Starting Grant, is to propose an advanced analysis of forms and patterns which, by unravelling their characteristics, will extract as much information as possible to i) feed a biodiversity database of morphological characteristics and ii) allow inference of the morphogenetic processes at work and their parameters.
