NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE STUDY OF PALEO-ATMOSPHERES AND THEIR IMPACTS ON THE BIOSPHERE OVER THE PAST 500 Ma

Highlights

·        Mechanisms of atmospheric mass change – both nitrogen and oxygen:  extreme UV radiation during low magnetic fields and outgassing during MOR seafloor spreading; bio-protection measures for high UVB exposure

·        Rapid Cooling Events, spikes in 15N, high UV radiation and extinctions during long periods of low magnetic intensity

·        Estimates of oxygen partial pressure (pO2) in paleo atmospheres  from the direct measurement of air trapped in halite and from pyrite, amber and other proxies

·        Indications of paleo density from  modeled pole to equator temperature gradients and Hadley cells;  polar forests and high latitude adiabatic warmth; tree heights;  wildfires, the Neogene uplift paradox and the marine/terrestrial derived pCO2 paradox,

·        Flight and respiration constraints on air density and pO2 from insects (odonata), the Hexapod and Large Volant Insect Gaps and wing stress;  the Big Bang of bat evolution and the giant birds of the Miocene/Pliocene
