Hybridisation often causes reduces biodiversity as it can lead to species fusion and loss of local adaptation. However, under certain conditions, hybridisation can facilitate evolutionary novelty. Using genomics, I show that hybridisation facilitated the extremely rapid evolution of hundreds of cichlid fish species and the evolution of a new colour race in Heliconius butterflies.
